Men: The Perfect Business Casual Interview Look

Posted by

Today, interviews may go beyond the classic office meeting. And with so many different types of work environments, it can be difficult to pull together the right look. When you're dressing for a business casual environment, a full suit may be too formal.

These easy pieces featured on Business Insider's guide to building the perfect casual wardrobe can make it easy to dress for business casual success.

Always a classic is the button-down shirt. Today's button-down shirts are tailored, with free collars, and made in different fabrics and colors. Use a button-down shirt as the basis for the rest of your outfit and you'll look polished and professional.

On cooler days, pair your button-down shirt with a crewneck sweater. Henleys and cardigans may also be appropriate for some professional settings, but lend different looks based on your personal style. Go warm and rugged with a henley, or retro and versatile with a cardigan.

Although well-fitting jeans might look great, these should stay in the closet for the interview. A better choice would be a good pair of khakis or chinos with a sharp crease. Pair with your button-down shirt, sweater or a sportcoat (not a suit jacket) and quality leather shoes, and you'll be ready for success.

Keep jewelry to the bare minimum: a nice watch and, if you're married, your wedding ring. Earrings, bracelets of any kind or neck chains may make your look seem dated and unprofessional instead of polished.

As shallow as it may seem, how you look make a huge difference. Employers need to be comfortable that your look will fit with the company and the work team. What do people wear at the company where you’ll be interviewing? Search the internet for any information about the company. Look for press releases or media. Feel free to ask the hiring manager what the dress code is—and then dress a step up from that. From the first look, you want to show how you’re a perfect match for the job.
