A Fresh Perspective On A Career In Retail

I had to find a killer outfit for a job interview, so I went to my favorite retail store, Ann Taylor Loft. I didn’t want something frumpy or just “OK,” and I trust ATL to have the latest styles and something for the professional who is 40-something.  OK, 50-something.  OK, let’s just stay for the professional woman.

 

My daughter actually suggested I go to ATL for my new outfit because they are known for customer service and savvy associates who can put the perfect outfit together before you can say “Elle Magazine.”  So, armed with my discount coupons from a previous purchase, I strolled into the local ATL to see them work their magic.

 

I wandered around for awhile before I found a great sweater jacket (on sale at $29 but with an extra 40 percent off!!)  I already had my favorite ATL black pants to go with it, but needed a shirt or blouse to complete the look.  There were lots of summer cotton shirts and T’s, but I didn’t see anything for my professional look.  Then I heard my daughter’s voice, “…they have stylists who can put together the perfect outfit.  Ask someone.” 

 

One of the employees, whom I’ll call Robert, had been checking in with me occasionally, so I asked him for help.  He asked me some questions about the outfit and the occasion and went into motion.  I followed him as he circled the store at a brisk pace.  He asked me for a color preference, and when I said yellow, he immediately found the perfect bright yellow silky collared blouse.  He even showed me the same blouse on a mannequin, and how to tuck it in with the proper blousing effect.  Perfect.  Not only did I love the outfit, but I felt I had gotten personal attention from my own fashion stylist. 

 

I got to talking to Robert while he was ringing up my purchases (the discount coupons had expired, but he told me about one online for $10 off, and helped me pull it up on my phone) and I was impressed with his enthusiasm for the job.  After signing on as a sales associate, in the past year he’s had several promotions and is now the store’s co-manager.  With his experience, attitude and excellent customer service skills, I’m sure he’ll be moving up in the company again soon. 

 

Any job can be a good career choice.  It depends on what you put into it, your career goals and your ability to seek out and act on opportunities.  There is always room for advancement, whether you work at McDonalds, Safeway, Seven-Eleven, Dillards or Ann Taylor Loft.  These large corporations are always looking for bright, energetic and hard-working individuals who can help the company be successful.  I’ve had employers tell me they prefer someone who started out in an entry-level position because they understand the business and what it takes to serve the customers. 

 

Taking a job isn’t an end, it’s a beginning.  Once an employee, you can qualify for a variety of benefits.  Opportunity is limited only by your performance on the job, willingness to learn and taking advantage of what’s available.
