    Horton, Inc., a global airflow industry leader in reliability, service and innovation has an opening for a Senior Buyer/Planner to work in our Britton, SD location.

    Position Summary:

    Correlates planning and scheduling to coordinate order release dates for manufacturing to obtain maximum utilization of machines and equipment and timing of assembly, shipping, and other related operations. Develops general company-wide cross-functional relationships. Analyzes various materials and services for different suppliers and develops strategic supplier relationships as necessary to serve the needs of production and purchasing.


    1. Continuous improvements

    1.1 Provides direction for continuous improvement of the purchasing process, including transaction processing internally and with suppliers.

    1. Plans production schedules and material requirements to ensure a controlled flow of approved materials timed to meet delivery requirements.

    2.1 Assists in drawing up master production schedule to establish sequence and lead-time of each operation to meet shipping dates according to sales forecast and / or customer orders.

    2.2 Plans inventory from forecast while maintaining minimum inventory levels through plant scheduling.

    2.3 Analyzes production specifications to determine processes, tools, and human resource requirements.

    2.4 Alters schedules to accommodate conditions such as changes in part availability, order priority, or machine maintenance or breakdown.

    1. Prepares and analyzes information relating to materials, scheduling, and planning.

    3.1 Assist in coordinating material movement between warehouse (s) and production areas.

    3.2 Creates custom reports for professional and production staff.

    1. Plans and analyzes the procurement of materials to assure accurate and timely on-hand quantities based on production estimates relative to economic order points and lead time parameters. Also, is responsible for MRO purchases.

    4.1 Assure the continuous supply and timely procurement of materials to ensure that production operates at optimum efficiency and effectiveness.

    4.2 Assist in price / cost analysis and development of long-term purchase contracts for purchased products, goods, and services. Communicates with all suppliers, company requirements and expectations. Negotiates with qualified suppliers to obtain the lowest total cost for products and services.

    4.3 Interview potential and current suppliers and maintain close contact, including site visits, to keep abreast of market conditions, and to comply with Quality System standards. Supplier assessments and supplier development should be part of the overall process when working with current or potential

    4.4 Handles truck service for regular, expedited, re-consigned, or diverted shipments based on production schedule changes or outages.

    4.5 Expedite deliveries of product and materials, and where necessary, get interdepartmental coordination for alternative suppliers or product if delivery is not available when required.

    4.6 Prepare price / cost estimates from quotes, bids, and proposals with a cost reduction strategy towards cost savings goals.

    4.7 Facilitates communication between Engineering and suppliers to explore opportunities to use existing products offered as solutions to product design challenges or to improve upon existing designs or specifications.

    4.8 Tracks the expediting of first article components from ordering through inspection.

    4.9 Develops suppliers that will support inventory management programs such as consignment or Kanban.

    1. Conduct supplier review for on-time delivery and quality expectations. Takes actions when sub-contractor is not performing at desired levels. This may include a corrective action process that involves several departments within both organizations.

    1. Where possible, recommends component standardization to create economies of scale and reduce variables, thus enhancing quality and developing potential cost savings.

    1. Provides information and shares ideas about materials and purchasing operations that will assist in the development of successful strategic plans for the plant.

    1. Performs other duties as directed by the Purchasing / Material Manager. Participates in special projects, either independently or with others, to develop reports, graphs and process improvements relating to operations and purchasing.


    Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related business field plus 5 years of purchasing related work experience in a manufacturing environment; or a 2-year Associate Degree or 2-year Technical Diploma plus 10 years of purchasing related work experience in a manufacturing environment.

    Note: Educational equivalent for the bachelor’s degree equals 8 years of purchasing related work experience. Educational equivalent for the Associate Degree and Technical Diploma equals 4 years of purchasing related work experience.

    Must have legal authorization to work in the United States. Relocation allowance may be provided if the individual has all of the necessary qualifications.
